Direct visualization of the arterial wall water permeability barrier using CARS microscopy.

The artery wall is equipped with a water permeation barrier that allows blood to flow at high pressure without significant water leak. The precise location of this barrier is unknown despite its importance in vascular function and its contribution to many vascular complications when it is compromised. Herein we map the water permeability in intact arteries, using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scat...

Crossing the arterial wall with CARS.

Regulation of the flow and movement of water is essential to the health and well-being of our bodies. Involving a diverse array of structures that range from molecular gatekeepers to tissue barriers, water flow and concentration are maintained at precise levels. However, in many instances we do not have a complete picture of how this works. A case in point is the arterial wall, which separates ...

Impact of Blood Vessel Wall Flexibility on the Temperature and Concentration Dispersion

The analysis of solute and thermal dispersion in pulsatile flow through the stenotic tapered blood vessel is presented. The present problem is an extension of the work done by Ramana et al. who considered the time-invariant arterial wall. In the present model, the flexible nature of the arterial wall through the obstruction (called stenosis) is considered and it is achieved with the he...

Direct visualization and quantitative analysis of water diffusion in complex biological tissues using CARS microscopy

To date, it has not been possible to measure microscopic diffusive water movements in epithelia and in the interstitial space of complex tissues and organs. Diffusive water movements are essential for life because they convey physiologically important small molecules, e.g. nutrients and signaling ligands throughout the extracellular space of complex tissues. Here we report the development of a ...

Candesartan Attenuates Ischemic Brain Edema and Protects the Blood–Brain Barrier Integrity from Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats

Background: Angiotensin II (Ang II) has an important role on cerebral microcirculation however, its direct roles in terms of ischemic brain edema need to be clarified. This study evaluated the role of central Ang II by using candesartan, as an AT1 receptor blocker, in the brain edema formation and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries in rat. Methods...
